Approtium, the largest hydrogen specialist company in South Korea, has recently signed a collaboration agreement with Denmark's Topsoe, one of the world's leading companies in hydrogen-related catalysts and technology. Both companies plan to cooperate in Korea clean hydrogen supply using ammonia cracking technology, which has a high level of technical maturity and competitiveness among clean hydrogen production technologies that utilize clean ammonia.
Ammonia is produced through the synthesis of nitrogen and hydrogen, releasing heat during the process. The cracking process to revert ammonia back into nitrogen and hydrogen requires the supply of heat. Efficiently managing the supply of reaction heat is a critical component of technological competitiveness.
Both companies aim to maximize their technological strengths to create synergy. Topsoe will provide design technology for plant construction, while Approtium will offer operational know-how to enhance the reliability and efficiency of processes. This collaboration will increase the commercial viability of the technology while contributing to the rapid expansion and widespread adoption of competitive clean hydrogen in South Korea.
Topsoe boasts industry-leading expertise in SMR (Steam Methane Reforming) technology used in hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and synthetic gas production processes. They have constructed over 300 commercial facilities based on this technology. Their large-scale ammonia cracking facilities, based on catalysts, have been in operation for over 30 years. During this time, Topsoe continuously developed and applied various versions of ammonia cracking catalysts. Recently, they developed the "H2 Retake" technology, which offers improved energy efficiency compared to their existing commercial ammonia cracking technology, further solidifying their leadership in ammonia cracking technology.
Approtium, on the other hand, has accumulated technical expertise in commercial-scale SMR and boasts the largest infrastructure assets, including pipelines and tube trailers in South Korea. They have been supplying raw hydrogen to petrochemical and refining companies. They are now focused on expanding their business to produce clean hydrogen for power generation and industrial applications. Through this technology collaboration with Topsoe, they aim to create more concrete and practical solutions for clean hydrogen supply.
This agreement marks a significant milestone for Approtium in advancing clean hydrogen supply in South Korea and contributing to the country's carbon neutrality goals. It provides a strong foundation for the company to grow as an environmentally friendly enterprise that offers future value to customers and society while leading the way in domestic clean hydrogen supply.
